This 24-hour, referral and emergency hospital serves pets across Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, delivering advanced veterinary care across multiple specialties. The hospital houses a robust team of specialists including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, Oncology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Clinical Pathology, and Avian/Exotic Medicine, as well as board-certified criticalists and a team of internship-trained emergency clinicians.

The hospital is teaching-oriented, with long-standing training programs emphasizing mentorship, clinical excellence, and a collegial, collaborative culture. Facilities include four fully equipped surgical suites, CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, digital radiography, multiple ultrasound units, rigid and flexible endoscopy, and a comprehensive in-house diagnostic laboratory. A 36,000-square-foot ICU includes dedicated gastrointestinal and respiratory isolation areas, high-flow oxygen systems, mechanical ventilators, telemetric ECG, defibrillators, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure monitoring. Additional resources include parenteral nutrition, peritoneal dialysis, radioactive iodine therapy, and an active blood bank program.

This three-year residency is structured according to ACVECC guidelines and provides progressive, immersive training in emergency and critical care. Residents spend approximately 60% of their time in direct clinical emergency and critical care under supervision of board-certified criticalists, while the remaining time rotates through related specialties including Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Anesthesia, Surgery, and Radiology.

Residents actively participate in daily case rounds, didactic sessions, and teaching of interns, technicians, and visiting students. Opportunities for scholarly development include attendance at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium (IVECCS) and participation in clinical rounds at local human hospitals.

The program is designed to develop well-prepared, confident clinicians equipped for board certification and specialty practice. Residents benefit from continuous mentorship from criticalists and multidisciplinary specialists, fostering professional growth and collaborative case management.

Completion of a small animal rotating internship or equivalent emergency experience in a specialty hospital

Graduates of non-AVMA-accredited institutions must meet all requirements for Rhode Island licensure
